Woon Kitchen is up and running
This is the first standalone Woon restaurant for owner Keegan Fong, who has been doing pop-ups around town at places like cocktail bar ETA in Highland Park for years. He runs the upstart spot with his mother, affectionately known as Mama Fong, under a sign that advertises casual homestyle Chinese food. That means everything from Shanghai-style noodles and bao to stir-fried vegetables and beyond, with alcohol to come down the line.
As for the space, this is the former Honey Pig Filipino barbecue restaurant building, totaling little more than 1,400 square feet in all. The space has been peeled back and largely left alone, save for some light wood tables, pendant lighting, and a long wooden ordering bar.

Woon has literally been built from the ground up by our friends and family. The talent pool that has helped get this place to where it is now still blows my fricking mind and I can’t thank everyone enough. I couldn’t dream of better people to work with. I’ll try my best to showcase some of my friends’ amazing work thus far. ~~~ Next up, the design of pretty much every damn inch in the space by @peterwildaydesigns. Literally not sure what I’d do in life without Pete. Its been a dream come true to be able to work with my best friend and roommate. He built our Woon cart for when we did our first pop up over 4 years ago and it’s still running strong. I can’t thank him enough for making our dream home/restaurant and having his hands on almost everything in this space. Don’t know if there’s anyone else in this world that can do it all like he can – throw ceramic pendants, design and build furniture, glue up a giant wood slab counter, patina copper curtain rods, eat enough Shabu Shabu for 10 people and tell me what Velcro to buy or what sheen of paint I need for bathroom walls. There’s honestly too much to say here so I’ll just tell him when I get home. #碗

Fong sent an email around just yesterday announcing the early opening, saying:
What began as a last minute idea to pop up at a local event evolved into more of a passion project that our family decided to do in addition to our full-time jobs… This is our first restaurant, and we’ve still got a lot of things to figure out. But there’s no good time to throw ourselves in it, so please come say hi.
Hours for the new Woon in Historic Filipinotown currently run Sundays and Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Those same hours hold Friday and Saturday, but with dinner extended to 11 p.m.
