Fred Perry is taking inspiration from Jamaica for its latest Spring/Summer 2019 capsule collection with the help of Art Comes First. The design duo celebrates its love of record sleeves in a four-piece capsule that draws inspiration from the Caribbean, taking to Jamaica in an editorial that sees members of the record shop Rockers International model the collaboration.
Designers Sam Lambert and Shaka Maidoh adapted one traditional Fred Perry polo shirt, giving the M12 Twin Tip two unique looks, each available in a slew of bright colorways. One polo is embroidered with the classic Laurel Wreath motif and features "FRED PERRY M12 CUSTOM-MADE WITH ART COMES FIRST" rear block printing. The other sees a more modern design featuring branded track tape around the arms, and the art duo’s signature patch stitched underneath the laurel.
The collection’s theme run further than just the design, with each polo shirt packaged in a record sleeve inspired by ska, reggae and rocksteady music, each designed by Art Comes First.
Discussing the collection, Lambert and Maidoh explained that “when it came to designing this collection with Fred Perry, we thought we would soundtrack what we are familiar with when we wear Fred Perry or when we see people wearing it — it was simply Rudeboy music… We’ve always been fascinated by record sleeves and how much creativity each artist puts into them. Most of the time, that was reason enough to buy a record. Rocksteady, reggae and ska…. always brightens our ideas and make us feel alive.”
The collection is rounded off by a pair of high-top sneakers finished in white and wearing the Art Comes First patch, coming with five Jamaican-themed laces, and finally a pair of black leather-trimmed braces.
The collection is available online and in stores from March 28 globally.
