Snagging the perfect hair color at the salon is a lot harder than you’d think. Going to an experienced colorist is important, of course, but customers also have to do their part to ensure they’re communicating their dye job desires clearly. Since this can be difficult for many (hey, we’re not all hair color experts), we tapped Master Colorist at Davide Hair Studio, Lisa Marshall, for her best tips on how to get on the same page as your colorist. Step One: Do your
research.
When looking for a colorist to perform your next dye job, start searching for professionals whose work you admire. "Social media is a fantastic tool," says Marshall. "Make sure that [the colorist] does the colors
and placements you like. If you can, find your inspiration pictures on their
page."
Step Two: Bring multiple
pictures.
“The hardest part of
getting your hair colored is making sure that you and your colorist are on the
same page," explains Marshall. "My suggestion is always to bring multiple pictures. Bring about two of
the specific tone and placement you like, and one picture of what you don’t like!" By bringing examples of hair shades you dislike, the colorist will know what they should absolutely avoid, helping to prevent a bad outcome.

Step Three: Trust
your stylist.
A common mistake clients make when it comes to hair color is to demand a specific shade. However, colorists can often immediately tell if that shade will clash with skin tone or eye color—which is not always what a client wants to hear. "The best thing you
can do is trust your stylist," says Marshall. "While it might not always be what you want to
hear, it is sometimes what you need to hear!"
Step Four: Book a consult first.
"Always make sure you
book a consultation before your actual color service," says Marshall. "This ensures that you
both have enough time to discuss your goals and map out a plan of how to get
there."

Step Five: Step up
your maintenance.
This shouldn’t be a surprise, but no one can expect to have long-lasting, beautiful hair color without doing their part to take care of it post-dye job. "It’s super important to maintain your color, so we provide clients with a customized
Color Care Card to take home so that they know the best tips and tricks to keep
their color vibrant, long-lasting, and ensure the integrity of your hair." To help keep hair color intact, we love using the Wella Brilliance line since it provides up to seven weeks of color protection.
