This week in celebrity real estate featured multimillion-dollar buys from across the entertainment spectrum including actors, a billionaire basketball team owner and a drummer from the legendary Grateful Dead.
The biggest trade of the week happened down south in Orange County, in the celeb-filled Laguna Beach. Mark Cuban, the billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks, dropped $19 million on a Montage Residences home on the Montage resort grounds. The 7,900-square-foot property has six bedrooms and eight bathrooms, along with sweeping ocean views. There is also a media room, wine cellar, gym and movie theater. Cuban’s Montage residence is one of 13 private homes on the exclusive property.
The property first hit the market in January asking nearly $26 million.
Cuban, a panel member on “Shark Tank,” recently sold the 52-theater Landmark chain to Charles Cohen, the billionaire real estate developer.
Farther north, Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann purchased a home in the fire-damaged Malibu neighborhood of Point Dume. Kreutzmann paid $4.9 million for the 3,241-square-foot home, which was built in 1973, according to Yolanda’s Little Black Book. The property, which is on a half-acre lot, features a master suite in a private wing and three other bedrooms. It was last sold in 2015 for $3.1 million, and then was remodeled by Bill Busbice, the former trucking magnate-turned-wildlife reality star. Point Dume is a noted celebrity enclave whose residents include filmmaker Spike Jonze, director James Mangold and billionaire hair care heiress Michaeline DeJoria.
Back in L.A.’s trendy Silver Lake neighborhood, comedian Kristen Wiig sold a 2,500-square-foot home for $5.23 million. The buyer was a trust controlled by Tim Disney, Walt Disney’s grand-nephew. The sale was more than double the price of any home in the neighborhood in the past three years, according to Yolanda. Architect Albert P. Martin built the home on the half-acre property in 1954. At 2,500 square feet, it has three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, an office, and a screening room in the main house. Wiig also added a pool and spa, and a 1,000-square-foot guesthouse and entertainment pavilion that has another bedroom and bathroom. Wiig, who starred in “Bridesmaids,” purchased the property in 2014 for $1.7 million and hired Taalman Architecture and The Archers to renovate the property.
Also in Silver Lake, Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio sold a Silver Lake home he owned through a trust for $1.6 million, the Los Angeles Times reported. Built in 1931, the property was occupied by one of DiCaprio’s relatives. The 3,560-square-foot home has four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, and features a gated courtyard entry with a koi pond. An elevator services all three levels. There is a swimming pool on the property, as well as a covered pavilion with a movie screen. DiCaprio also has owned homes in Malibu, Palm Springs and Studio City.
In the desert, a Palm Springs home where Elvis Presley honeymooned with Priscilla Presley is now on the market for $2.98 million, after receiving two offers over its asking price of $2.7 million. The five-bedroom house has struggled to find a buyer in recent years, despite once being dubbed by Look magazine as the “House of the Future.” Boston-based Tri Villa Trust had originally listed the property at $9.5 million in 2014. Presley leased the house for a year in 1966, and then settled there after marrying in 1967. Designed by architect William Krisel, the mid-century modern features a freestanding circular hearth, a V-shaped pool and a 64-foot banquette.
