Serena Williams is constantly reminding the world of two things: One, her level of athleticism is basically what the acronym “GOAT” was invented to describe. And two, she is an absolute fashion icon, pushing boundaries, setting trends, using her style to start conversations and just generally having fun with clothes. It’s delightful.
During the 2018 U.S. Open in August, she caught the attention of tennis and fashion fans alike with the pieces off-White’s Virgil Abloh designed in collaboration with her for Nike. And most recently, at the 2019 Australian Open, Williams competed against Tatjana Maria on Monday night wearing yet another attention-worthy ensemble.
The look in question is a turquoise leotard with graphic stripes at the waistline and down the center. Making the ensemble even more impactful, Williams layered the one-piece over flesh-tone fishnet tights, which were hard to spot from far away, but evident in close-ups.
In a post-match interview with Metro, Williams spoke about having designed the leotard in collaboration with Nike. “I have been working really, really hard in the offseason to be incredibly fit and incredibly ready,” said the athlete of her choice to show off all that hard work via a body-hugging leotard. “Nike always wants to make an incredibly strong, powerful statement for moms that are trying to get back and get fit. That was basically it for me.”
