The former Hotel Deca has reopened after an extensive renovation as the Graduate Hotel, and it’s packing some serious restaurant firepower. The hotel includes three food and beverage options: an already-open cafe, plus a still-to-come rooftop bar and a new outpost of an iconic Los Angeles Chinese restaurant.
Perhaps the most exciting newcomer here is Genghis Cohen, a Los Angeles-based, New York-style Chinese restaurant and music venue. Crispy egg rolls, turkey dumplings, and ginger chicken are among the standouts at the famed spot, which should be ready by late 2019.
The rooftop bar, The Mountaineer Club, is also scheduled to open in late February from respected Los Angeles restaurateurs Marc Rose and Med Abrous. The restaurant sits in a former penthouse suite and has indoor and outdoor seating areas. Views extend to the Space Needle and Mount Rainier.
The menu will include plates like scallop crudo with grape, basil, and Serrano chile; smoked salmon with avocado, jalapeno, and roasted tomato; raw oysters; and cast iron cucumbers with ricotta chile pesto and toast. Seattle native Jabriel Donohue, formerly of Dino’s Tomato Pie, is creating the cocktail menu with regional ingredients. There are promises of warm, large format cocktails served in Thermoses.
The only dining option currently open in the hotel is Poindexter, an all-day cafe on the lobby level. It serves coffee from Coffee Manufactory, the specialty coffee brand created by the Bay Area’s award-winning Tartine Bakery. Poindexter also serves hot breakfast sandwiches, salads, smoothies, pressed juices, and more. Starting next month, the cafe will add a wine menu with a focus on natural wines, a retail wine component, and additional food menus.
The hotel is the 12th in the Graduate Hotels portfolio; there are also locations in Oxford, Miss., Richmond, Va., and Berkeley, Calif.
