Next week, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission is scheduled to take up consideration of Venice Community Housing Corporation’s proposal to redevelop its administrative offices with permanent supportive housing.
The proposed development, which would rise at 718-722 E. Rose Avenue, would consist of a four-story building containing 34 studio and one-bedroom apartments reserved for the formerly homeless, one manager’s apartments, and 17 parking spaces.
Brooks + Scarpa and Tina Chee Landscape Studio are designing the project, which would feature a U-shaped frame above a one-level podium. In addition to housing, the contemporary low-rise building would include a recreation room, a courtyard, a laundry facility, supportive services, and Venice Community Housing’s new administrative offices.
Three Venice residents – John Reed, Jim Murez, and Marie Hammond – have appealed the project to the City Planning Commission arguing that the Rose Avenue Apartments do not comply with local zoning regulations and that it violates the California Coastal Act.
A staff report to the City Planning Commission recommends that the appeal should be denied in part and that the project should be approved. Staff recommends that the Commission should modify certain conditions to ensure compliance with the California Coastal Act.
In addition to the Rose Avenue Apartments, Venice Community Housing has teamed up with Hollywood Community Housing Corporation to build a 140-unit affordable development along the Venice Canals.
