As of late December, a new cocktail and coffee spot has opened in Chinatown called Songbird, offering a dark, moody interior with the odd combination of morning and late night service, but nothing in between. Founded by Scott Chen, who also operates Apt 503 in Koreatown and Rabbit Hole in Alhambra, Songbird serves coffee and tea in the mornings from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. then closes until 8 p.m. where it opens again serving cocktails by Jason Yu until about 1 a.m. It’s a speakeasy situation tucked behind Blossom restaurant that should serve locals well, although there are already plenty of coffee and cocktail spots in the area already.
Yu’s cocktail menu focuses more on the bitter world of liqueurs, with a focus on bitters and amari like one called the Insta-Shaker, mixing gin, campari, punt e mes, and creme de cacao served on the rocks. Another is called Second Hand Smoke, with brandy, averna, antica, bitters, and applewood smoke. The coffee and cocktail combination should come in handy during Songbird’s live performances, which should cover a variety of musical genres. The cafe operates Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the cocktail bar runs Wednesday to Saturday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.
