For the Los Angeles Lakers, 2018 was a year of promise, excitement and realization. After starting the year with a young core that looked ready to soon compete, the purple and gold landed LeBron James in the summer and look more than just a playoff contender near the midway point of the 2018-19 season.
With 2019 shaping up to be an even bigger and more exciting year that will likely include the Lakers first playoff appearance in half a decade and the potential for another superstar to don the purple and gold.
Following the Lakers win over the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, Lonzo Ball talked about some of the team’s goals for the remainder of the 2018-19 season and 2019 as a whole.
“We’re going to ramp it up, ramp it up. Get ready for the playoffs and try to get a good season going.”
“Just continue to grow, continue to mature. Today was a good day for us. We rebounded from the last two games. We’re competing. Now we’re starting to get the attention to deeper aspects of it. Just expecting to grow and mature in those aspects.”
While the recent injuries have hampered some of the progress the Lakers had been making but it hasn’t halted it. Sans LeBron James and Rajon Rondo, the Lakers are taking on different roles and showcasing talents not seen as much in previous games, weeks and even seasons.
Ball, for example, continues showing new levels of his pick and roll ability as well as his continued aggressiveness in getting to the rim.
Those types of developments make 2019 all the more intriguing from a Lakers point of view. With so much progression from the young core still possible and so many roster possibilities still available, the future looks bright for the Lakers franchise in the new year.
