That’s according to Ethan Strauss of The Athletic, who claims the Golden State Warriors are confident or resigning Thompson.
The Lakers have created enough cap space to sign a max contract star this summer with a host of players potentially available.
Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Thompson and several other All-Stars could be set to join new teams at the end of the season.
More than half the players in the league will become free agents, meaning there will be a high number of teams looking to make moves.
The Lakers though will be looking to sign another superstar to play with LeBron James and help them become contenders again.
Durant and Leonard are seemingly their top targets, however there has been reports suggesting neither player would choose the Lakers.
That has led to some suggestion that they may turn their focus towards Thompson, with pundits stating he would be the better fit alongside James.
The three-time NBA champion took to Instagram this week to praise Thompson for his 43-point performance against the New York Knicks.
And that got Lakers fans dreaming of the two teaming up at the Lakers in the summer.
However, Strauss reports that Thompson is more than likely to resign with the defending champions when his contract expires at the end of the season.
“While Thompson has indicated an interest in remaining a “Warrior for life,” his return cannot just be taken for granted,” Strauss wrote.
“Still, the expectation within and outside the Warriors is that Klay isn’t leaving.
“This is why you don’t hear about any team besides the Lakers gearing up for the Summer of Klay.”
Thompson has repeatedly stated that he wants to stay with Golden State and wants to retire with the team.
But the Warriors will face a tough decision with Durant also set to become a free agent, and both players will want max contracts.
