But no date has been given for his return.
James hurt his groin in the Christmas Day win over the Golden State Warriors and has not played since.
In a statement, the Los Angeles Lakers said the NBA star was continuing to be evaluated and assessed.
The statement said: “LeBron James was evaluated by team medical staff and physicians today.
“The healing of James’ groin injury is progressing and James has been cleared to increase on-court functional basketball movements.
“A further update will be provided on January 16.”
Last night, James was courtside at the Staples Centre as the Lakers beat the Detroit Pistons 113-100.
It means James will miss games against the Utah Jazz on Friday, the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday and the Chicago Bulls on January 16.
The Lakers then play the Oklahoma City Thunder on January 18 before the Houston Rockets on January 20 and the Warriors on January 22.
In the absence of James and Rajon Rondo, the Lakers have lost five of their last eight matches.
But after beating the Pistons, Lakers coach Luke Walton praised his players of adjusting to the injury problems.
“I thought our team showed a lot of growth from the post-LeBron and Rondo injuries,” Walton said.
“There were times in that game tonight where in previous games we would’ve bled points and what not and started taking quick shots.
“I thought our guys did a nice job staying composed, continuing to share the ball, continuing to make plays.
“And ultimately, winning by competing on the defensive end.”
