A jury has found a former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy guilty of lying to federal investigators looking into the beating of a jail visitor.
The Los Angeles Times reports Friday’s verdict against Byron Dredd marks the final conviction against each of the 22 sheriff’s deputies and officials charged in the case, including former Sheriff Lee Baca.
The convictions stem from the 2011 beating of Gabriel Carrillo, who was visiting his brother in jail. Carrillo reportedly mouthed off while being detained for having a cellphone. He was kicked, punched, and pepper-sprayed, his face left battered and bruised.
Jurors found that Dredd lied to the FBI when he said Carrillo was the one who attacked deputies.
Carrillo’s attorney argued that Dredd didn’t lie but was simply mistaken in what he saw.
Dredd faces up to five years in prison.
