Some employee haven’t seen a paycheck since December 21
As the government shutdown enters its twenty-fifth day, Congress still has not passed an appropriations bill, leaving 800,000 workers without a paycheck. It’s now the longest shutdown in U.S. history, and there is no relief in sight. Thankfully, some Southern California restaurants are stepping in to provide a bit of a reprieve instead, offering free meals for federal employees.
Here are some of the greater LA restaurants stepping up to offer free food to furloughed federal workers:
One flash of a government ID at Taco Pete in South LA, and workers can take home two french fries, two sodas, and a pack of eight tacos.
The crew at Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen offer a “FED Special.” For the duration of the shutdown, $2 and a federal ID gets a small coffee and two beignets.
At The Parlor on Melrose, expect $2 domestic draft beers from Wednesday to Thursday, 5 p.m to 6 p.m.
In Cypress, the Burger Spot 1 will pay for an entire family’s meal during the shutdown, but only with a government-issued ID.

KISS rock legends Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons announced that every TSA employee working without pay can dine for free at their Rock & Brews chain. They’ve got plenty of Southern California locations, including two in LAX. TSA employees can come in everyday and choose from the pulled pork sandwich or salad to TSA employees with an ID card.
