There is relief in the form of food, coffee, beignets, and margaritas
It’s been a nasty first week for Los Angeles teachers. While educators and supporters protested in front of schools, they saw five days of heavy rain. Unless the Los Angeles teachers union (UTLA) and the school district (LAUSD) reach a deal, this coming Monday will start the second week of the strike. While they work this out, some Los Angeles restaurants want to support teachers and their families with free or discounted food and drink.
It’s a challenging time for workers in Los Angeles. The government shutdown has unpaid federal workers wondering when the next paycheck is coming, while teachers are negotiating larger class sizes, pay, and working conditions with a district that is just as emphatic about keeping costs down.
Some local taco trucks have been feeding striking teachers all week, but here are some Southern California restaurants are offering teacher discounts or free drinks.
With proper identification, teachers can stop into Hot and Cool Cafe in Leimert Park, Toluca Lake’s Sweet Salt Food Shop, or Glassell Park’s Lemon Poppy Kitchen and grab a free cup of coffee for the duration of the strike. At Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen, staff will hand out free coffee and beignets to groups of teachers organizing in and around the restaurant’s View Park/Windsor Hills neighborhood.
All Granville locations in West Hollywood, Studio City, Glendale, and Burbank will provide teachers a free meal and non-alcoholic beverage of choice. Educators must show a badge, school ID, or credential to redeem.
Old-school favorite Papa Cristo’s Greek Grill & Market will take 20 percent off any menu item with a teacher ID. That’s a fantastic discount for the already reasonably-priced traditional Greek menu with kebabs, spanakopitas, grilled eggplants, and moussaka.

At the Banc of California stadium, The Fields LA food hall will offer a 50 percent discount on food and beverages for teachers and their entire families. Just bring teacher ID from now until the strike ends.
Cascabel Restaurant in Toluca Lake Drinks will buy one free margarita with the purchase of a meal, but only with a school ID or UTLA membership card.
