In March 2018, Reformation announced a collaboration with model Ali Tate Cutler, which offered pieces in sizes 0-22 and XS-3X. It was a welcome move from the sustainable brand which achieved cult status within the fashion industry.
“Last year we started receiving a lot of comments on social media and requests from customers for more inclusive sizing,” the brand said in a release at the time. “We agree it’s unfair that we only offer clothing to a limited size range and have been working on changing this. We’re now happy to be launching a collection with more sizes (0-22). We’re super sorry we didn’t do it sooner.”
At the time of launch, only the pieces from the collaboration were available in the extended size range, but a representative from the brand promised that the collection was the ”first step towards fully launching into the category.” While many criticized that size 22 was still not far enough towards making the brand more inclusive for the plus-size community, shoppers and fashion press alike rejoiced at Reformation’s seemingly-open and apologetic approach towards entering into the market.
The only problem? The extended size offerings seemed to have disappeared along with the final pieces of Cutler’s collaboration. An examination of Reformation’s site brings up no option to search for any sizes beyond a 12. See the screenshots below, taken as of 1:30 p.m. EST on Jan. 11:
You can still shop from the “Extended Sizes” collection on the website — if you’re looking for one of seven styles of jeans, that is. The brand’s latest drop, for instance — the sexy Italiana collection — very likely came together after the Cutler collaboration and doesn’t feature anything above an XL, which Reformation deems the equivalent of a size 12.
So what happened here? The Cutler collaboration was announced nearly a year ago, which means it was surely in production for months before that. Why wouldn’t any of Reformation’s newest offerings come in the promised extended sizes? At the very least, why wouldn’t the brand’s bridal offerings — something of a mainstay at Reformation — have expanded outwards by now? Was Reformation’s promise of catering to plus-size customers all talk and no action?
