The return
The loss of Gesso last month on Fairfax meant one less neighborhood restaurant for the area north of Melrose, but now the group behind the project is plotting something new. Or, actually, something old and familiar. Reps for American Gonzo Food Corp., the group behind Gesso and the previous tenant at that address, Pitfire Pizza, say they will be reopening the Fairfax storefront to serve pizzas, salads, veggies, and sides — but only for take-out or delivery. The so-called Pitfire Pizza Pop-Up will run daily from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. starting January 3, but with no seating inside the restaurant for guests.
More best
It’s TimeOut’s turn to list out its best new restaurants of 2018. Among the highlights: Ma’am Sir, the NoMad, Viale dei Romani, and Alta Adams, to name a few.
Jazz night
Want a more mellow New Years Eve? Ingo’s Tasty Diner in Santa Monica is doing a $125 jazz night with cocktails and food. The evening starts at 9 p.m. and runs until 1 a.m.
Ramen arrives
Silverlake Ramen is close to opening in Downtown. The small shop at 6th and Spring is in the final stages of its build-out, and is starting to hire up now.

Noodle crawl
LAist is on the case of China’s many most famous noodles. From dan dan to knife-cut, the site breaks down where to find the good stuff.
No barbecue
Austin’s La Barbecue team opened up about their plans to no longer come to Los Angeles, says Eater Austin. The reason? They’re blaming California’s strict emissions standards that make running a Texas-style offset smoker a pain.
But the hats look nice
Speaking of barbecue, at least one high-profile athlete seems to think there’s still some good brisket to be had at Slab on West Third Street. Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was spotted wearing one of the new company’s maroon hats during last week’s post-game press conference. Check it out below.
