Jeremiah Turley, the standout senior point guard from Westchester, stayed home from school Monday on the first day of the teachers’ strike against the Los Angeles Unified School District.
“My parents decided that it would be best I stay home, get a break and my parents support the teachers,” he said. “My grandmother is a teacher.”
He said he and senior guard Jordan Brinson will gather their 18-1 team together to hold a practice at a park in Compton on Tuesday. He said he and Brinson were put in charge of a practice last week with coach Ed Azzam observing.
“We figured the strike was going to happen and he watched us and gave us the nod to do it,” he said.
Official practices and games have been called off. Coaches are not allowed to direct practices during the work stoppage.
Westchester was scheduled to play 17-1 Fairfax on Friday in the game of the year in the City Section. That game is in doubt.
