The closely watched but reliably elusive artist David Hammons will have a show at the Hauser & Wirth’s Los Angeles space in the spring, running from May 18 through August 10.
This will be Hammons’s first solo show in Los Angeles in 45 years, according to Hauser & Wirth partner Marc Payot, who uncorked the rather dramatic news at a lunch hosted by the mega-gallery today in New York.
It is also a homecoming of sorts for Hammons, since he spent many of his formative years in L.A. after moving there from Springfield, Illinois, in 1963, to attend art school and then stayed until 1974, when he decamped for New York, where he’s been based ever since.
Hammons has eschewed the kind of formal gallery-representation arrangements that most artists spend a career chasing, instead choosing to show in an ad-hoc fashion at galleries like Mnuchin in New York and White Cube in Los Angeles. He also has a connection with Hauser & Wirth, having done a show at its Zurich location in 2003.
The Hammons exhibition, featuring new work, will take up two of the gallery spaces in Hauser & Wirth’s location in Downtown Los Angeles.
