Apple is abolishing their revolutionary iTunes program after 18 years. According to sources, the tech giant will instead launch a new trio of apps for the next MacBook OS in replacement of the media platform — Music, TV and Podcasts. With the removal of iTunes, customers can manage their Apple gadgets through the Music app.
iTunes was first revealed at the 2001 Macworld Expo as a cure to the music industry’s piracy plague. However, the introduction of subscription-based streaming has lowered the platform’s value and has significantly overtaken music downloads. According to the RIAA’s 2018 report, 75% of the U.S. music industry’s revenue came from streaming and only 11% from digital downloads.
