The form of inflammation, caused by a disruption to the outer layer of skin, is annoying as hell. But it’s a lot easier, and faster, to fix than you might think. We spoke to dermatologist and Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research at Mount Sinai Hospital, Josh Zeichner, MD, who said it takes just a few simple steps to cure razor burn quickly. "When the skin is irritated, it’s important to help provide a protective seal so the skin can maintain hydration," says Dr. Zeichner. He recommends this lightweight lotion, which contains triple-purified petrolatum, because it’s easy to spread and doesn’t leave skin greasy.

Sure, this is more than you’d spend on everyday body lotion, but this aftershave cream works to soothe and prevent ingrowns, bumps, and razor burn.

Aveeno Active Naturals Anti-Itch Cream
"Besides a good moisturizer, you may need to apply a fire extinguisher to the skin," says Dr. Ziechner. After spreading lotion everywhere, he recommends spot treating inflamed areas with an over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream like this one.

Dove Sensitive Skin Body Wash
Dr. Zeichner says you should be extra careful when cleansing the skin when you have razor burn. Avoid harsh scrubs and exfoliators, which can make matters worse. Instead, stick to hydrating cleansers that remove dirt and oil while protecting the integrity of the outer layer of skin.
If your rash still doesn’t improve in a few days, Dr. Zeichner suggests seeing a board-certified dermatologist for an evaluation.
