From a new French spot in Los Feliz to a restaurant inside an old firehouse downtown, here are three new L.A. restaurants worth checking out this month.
Loupiotte Kitchen
A slice of Paris along Vermont Avenue, this daytime spot is the work of two restaurateurs who ran a bistro near the Arc de Triomphe. At home with California produce, the kitchen enlivens a wedge of quiche with goat cheese and Swiss chard, while buttery polenta is made richer with mushrooms and a fried egg. 1726 N. Vermont Ave., Los Feliz.
The Restaurant at the Firehouse Hotel
This airy dining room set inside a restored 1920s firehouse is casual without sacrificing style. Former NoMad chef Ashley Abodeely knows how to make seared branzino sing with tahini and grilled scallions and cooks a mean burger, too. Rustic Canyon vet Rose Lawrence’s desserts (strawberry shortcake with charred lemon) are worth ringing the alarm bell. 710 S. Santa Fe Ave., Arts District.
Shaquille’s
Lakers legend Shaquille O’Neal isn’t the first celeb to roost near Staples Center, but his modern Southern restaurant manages to outcharm any competition. Fried chicken is served on a porcelain cake stand; apps include black pepper biscuits, fried green tomatoes, and baked oysters. Need something stronger than sweet tea? The bar turns out a fine barrel-aged old-fashioned. L.A. Live, 800 W. Olympic Blvd., Ste. A150, downtown.
