From wood-fired fare at the Beverly Center to a porchetta power house downtown, here are three new L.A. restaurants worth checking out this month.
Birdie G’s
James Beard award-winning chef Jeremy Fox gets personal with a sunny new spot dedicated to comfort food and named after his 3-year-old daughter. The high-low menu is full of playful riffs on comfort food from a sloppy Jeremy with beef-strawberry bolognese to a chopped salad with black truffle pecorino and ‘nduja. Blue Plate specials, like a Thursday night meatloaf and mash, add to the fun. 2421 Michigan Ave., Santa Monica.
Angler
The critically lauded San Francisco seafood spot has opened in the Beverly Center, and it’s literally hot. Chef Joshua Skenes cooks everything from spot prawns to steaks to flounder over a massive 32-foot-wide, wood-fired hearth. Skenes uses a unique system of heat zones to bring an unusual level of precision to cooking proteins by fire, but don’t skip the vegetables. The whole head of radicchio served with an umami-packed X.O. dressing is a must-order dish. Put on the provided bib and then cut into it. It’s a bloody, utterly delicious mess. 8500 Beverly Blvd., Beverly Grove.
Porchetta Republic
Popular Smorgasburg vendor Porchetta Republic now has a brick-and-mortar location to satisfy your piggy needs throughout the week. There are no fewer than four sandwiches with the namesake fatty pork roast on offer, featuring everything from arugula and parmesan to provolone and wine-braised onions. Fresh bread from Quebec’s Boulart provides a perfect based for the crispy-skinned porchetta, which the shop cooks on a rotisserie for up to five hours. There are also numerous veggie sandwiches and salads if porchetta isn’t your thing, but really, it should be. 1220 W. 7th St., downtown.
